Heron Herald Term 4, Week 2

Kia ora koutou,

I want to give a big shout-out to our fantastic PTA team! On Saturday night, we held Beats by Bingo, where hundreds of Matua parents brought their creativity and passion for community together to enjoy an evening of bingo, dancing, music, auctions, and competitions. Pulling a night like this together is no easy task, but the team rallied and made it a fantastic event for everyone involved. If you see one of the PTA team around the school, please take a moment to express your thanks for the significant effort they put in — it truly made a difference.

A special thank you also goes to the sponsors who supported the PTA. A number of local businesses were promoted on the night and on the PTA Facebook page — your support is greatly appreciated.

Finally, if you attended the event, bought tickets, had a drink, or made a bid in the silent auctions — thank you for being part of the Matua School community. We hope you had a great time!

NZEI TEACHER AND SUPPORT STAFF STRIKE

NZEI Te Riu Roa, the teacher and support staff union, have announced a full-day strike to take place on Thursday 23 October 2025. This action involves primary school teachers, support staff, and Ministry of Education specialists. Many of our staff will be participating, so Matua School and other primary schools in the Ōtūmoetai cluster will be closed for the day.

We therefore ask that you make alternative arrangements for the care of your child/children on this date.

We understand that this closure may cause inconvenience for families, and we appreciate your support and understanding. Please be assured that student safety remains our top priority.

Limited supervision will be available for children where parents are unable to make other arrangements. To register a place in this programme, please complete THIS FORM before the end of Sunday, 19th October.

Should there be any further updates regarding the strike, we will communicate these with you as soon as possible.

BOOK BATTLE

During the final week of Term 3, a team of enthusiastic readers represented our school in an epic Book Battle against other Tauranga schools. In preparation, they read five different novels and faced a series of challenging questions about each book. The competition also included three exciting bonus rounds: general knowledge, New Zealand birds, and a special category focused on books with portals. What an effort from this group of girls!

PIZZA SHOUT

Rooms 7 and 10 have been so motivated to move up the scoreboard for our Wednesday Challenge — and they did it! We had the privilege of celebrating their effort and teamwork with some well-deserved pizza. A big thank you to Anna, who is a School Programme Coordinator for the Wednesday Challenge, for making it happen!

WBOP TENNIS

A fantastic sunny day at Papamoa tennis centre on Wednesday saw our Matua Team take on the best primary tennis kids across the western BOP. Our tamariki were phenomenal! We had Tom and Asher battle it out in the year 5/6  final with Asher finishing first and Tom second.
In the girls competition we had Minhye competing and after a tough first game she won all of her remaining games and finished an amazing 2nd place. All of those students have qualified for the Waikato BOP Regional Primary finals. In the doubles Viktor and Henry teamed up together and were a dream combination finishing up the competition in second place. The kids were really proud and had a great day – congratulations!

SCHOOL DONATIONS

School donations are an important part of how we can add extra value to our school and learning environment.  We are excited to have opened up a new fitness trail, which is a direct result of donations from last year.  This year, we are working towards extending outdoor play areas for our growing school and would love to see a new play-space developed near the Clivedene boundary.  Your support with donations will enable this to happen.  Full and partial payments of school donations can be paid now through Kindo.
An important note: School Donations are tax-deductible, so if you pay your donation soon, you can claim a one-third rebate from the IRD at the end of the financial year!  Check out the flyer below, which has more information about why we have School Donations.
