Heron Herald Term 1, Week 6

Kia ora Matua families,

Regular attendance at school is one of the most important factors in supporting children’s learning and overall well-being. Each day in the classroom offers new opportunities for students to build their skills, strengthen relationships, and feel confident in their progress. When children attend consistently, they are better able to keep up with their learning, participate fully in class activities, and develop the routines that help them thrive.  The Ministry of Education has a national push to raise attendance rates across the country. For a child to be considered regularly attending school, they need to have fewer than 5 days absent in a term.  If they have more, for any reason, the MoE considers them to be at risk and will record them as not attending regularly.

As parents, we know how quickly absence rates can grow.  If your child has a few days off sick with the flu, and you take a Friday off school for a long weekend away, suddenly, your child’s attendance is outside the range of regular attendance at school.  When you look at it through this lens, it highlights the importance of taking attendance seriously and not being too casual about taking the odd day off school.

Matua School is required to have an ‘Attendance Management Plan’, which is available on the school website.  As part of that plan, when your child’s attendance reaches certain thresholds, the school will contact you.  That might be a classroom teacher checking in with you, a letter coming home via HERO or a phone call from our Senior Leadership Team.  Whatever the approach, our desire is to support you in having your children at school as regularly as possible.

Below is an image outlining the attendance steps.  The full Attendance Management Plan can be accessed by following THIS LINK.

ON LEVERS CAFE – GARDEN TO TABLE SPONSORS

I would like to give a special shout-out to the team at On Levers Cafe!  We are regular visitors to this local cafe, taking our CBA Draw winners there for a special treat.  This year, the On Levers Cafe Team have offered to sponsor part of our Garden to Table programme.  We need to purchase food and other resources to complement that programme, and this sponsorship is a significant contribution towards that cost.  If you are out for a coffee or meeting friends for lunch, consider trying On Levers Cafe!

TEACHER ONLY DAY REMINDER

This is a friendly reminder that we have an MOE-sponsored Teacher Only Day booked for Friday, 20th March. Our teaching team will work with a mathematics facilitator as we continue to develop teaching and learning practices aligned with the refreshed curriculum.  sKids are offering a special programme should you require childcare.

RĀKAU TEAM – CAMP EXPERIENCE

Over the last two weeks, our Year 5 and 6 classes spent two nights at the Ngamuwahine Outdoor Education Lodge in the Kaimais.  This three-day experience is loaded with non-stop adventure activities that build teamwork, provide physical challenges and create a heap of fun!  Our Matua kids always do us proud on these camps, and this year’s group are no exception.  We are proud of their willingness to push personal boundaries, try new things and support each other in successes and failures.  These are all opportunities for learning!

A special shoutout to our teaching team, support staff and parent volunteers.  Without each of these people, the camp couldn’t have happened.

LIBRARY NEWS

Once a term your child will bring home a Scholastic Book Club catalogue.  Scholastic Book Club Issue 2 will be handed out to students very soon.

Our school receives 20% of the price of each book purchased through the Scholastic Book Club.  In turn, the scholastic dollars are used to purchase books and literacy resources for the school.  There are many fantastic books available at reasonable prices, but please do not feel pressured by your child to purchase from the Book Club Catalogues.  This is a resource offered to the community.

Orders are made online with credit card payment using the scholastic loop (you can also download the scholastic loop app).   The school does not accept cash. If you would like the book or purchase to be a gift, click the gift tab when ordering online, and we will contact you when the order arrives at the school office.  Books purchased will be handed out to children in their classrooms unless they are gifts which are picked up from the office.

Room 1 students can place their orders under the library for this issue when using scholastic loop. Your teacher and room will be added for following issues.

MAHURI NEWS

These terrific Māhuri students were presented with certificates at our assembly this week. From showing courage when learning becomes tricky to being a teacher’s ’go to’ student in class – these kiddos are making the most of their learning experiences here with us at Matua school.

SPORTS THANKYOU

A huge big thanks to our wonderful parents Joe and Anna Dixon. They have generously gifted the school 8 new Kelme volleyballs!  They are amazing and we also received the coolest bag. We have huge interest and growth in our students wanting to give volleyball a go and it’s great to have equipment the kids can use any time at school. We are super lucky indeed! Thanks heaps!!

SPORT NEWS

Earlier this term, over 30 students took part in the Otumoetai Football Club “Girls’ Football Taster” session with Joe and Sofie . It was great to see students who were new to football get out there and give it a go. Everyone had such a great time. Thanks so much Otumoetai Football club, what a great initiative.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

Thank you for ensuring your children are in the correct school uniform at the start of the year.  We are coming to the end of a three-year transition to our new uniform, and so at the start of 2027 the expectation is that all children will be wearing the new items.  Old designs and fabrics will not be acceptable from then.
For this year the older style polos, hats and pants are fine.  However, we want to ensure that children are wearing one version of the school’s uniform set.  At the start of the year, teachers will ask children to speak with their parents if they are wearing the incorrect uniform.  We often see children with dangly earrings, socks with big brands on the side, bike shorts that are for weekend sport rather than school or hats in the wrong colour or style.  New uniforms can be purchased from NZ UNIFORMS  and some secondhand uniforms are available through the PTA.

SCHOOL DONATIONS

School donations are an important part of how we can add extra value to our school and learning environment.  We are excited to have opened up a new fitness trail, which is a direct result of donations from last year.  This year, we are working towards extending outdoor play areas for our growing school and would love to see a new play-space developed near the Clivedene boundary.  Your support with donations will enable this to happen.  Full and partial payments of school donations can be paid now through Kindo.
An important note: School Donations are tax-deductible, so if you pay your donation soon, you can claim a one-third rebate from the IRD at the end of the financial year!  Check out the flyer below, which has more information about why we have School Donations.
