Heron Herald Term 3, Week 2, 2022

Kia ora koutou,

This term, we welcome Scott Pratt to Matua School. Scott has returned to NZ after teaching at an international school in Hong Kong for several years. Before this, he taught at Otumoetai Intermediate. Scott is teaching the wonderful children in Room 11, taking over from Anna Mason, who is on maternity leave. We also welcome back Abha Tandon as the Room 8 classroom teacher. Abha has started our latest roll-growth class, full of excited young 5-year-olds!

Mystery Bus Trip
This term, our learning is focused on the Social Sciences curriculum. We are building our learning around the concept: ‘He kākano ahau – I am a seed born of greatness. We want to grow in our understanding that history tells us how people and places change over time and can be used to understand our past, present & future. To ignite this learning, we are taking the whole school on a Mystery Bus Trip. This has been postponed to Monday 15th August due to the weather forecast. We appreciate those who have volunteered to be parent helpers. If you volunteered for the day, please communicate with your teacher to confirm you can do the new date.

@School App Communications
This year we have been working on streamlining our communication with families so that all critical information is delivered through the @School App. Thank you to those who have downloaded the app or connected using a browser. All essential information from school will be sent this way, so if you haven’t been able to join, don’t hesitate to contact the office for support.

Nga mihi,

Marcus Norrish
Principal

LIBRARY

Our Team

A big thank you to our Term 1 and 2 Matua Librarians.  They were super busy promoting (and judging) our Book Character Day and running our annual Donate A Book Fair at the end of last term.  Students and their families would have seen flyers created by librarians around the school and watched them judge during the parade. Behind the scenes, the librarians organized and priced books, set up the fair in the library, and volunteered to run the Bookfair.  It has in essence been a successfully run small business venture by our School Librarians.

We were in awe how our community rallied around our students on Book Character Day.  Thank you all for your involvement.  The day and the parade promoted great discussion around books and their protagonists.

Our well experienced librarians are now helping to train our budding Term 3 and 4 Librarians.  We welcome Hazel, Sheena, Tom, Aiden, Luca, Will, Elise F, Michael, Emily, Page, Laria, Lulu, Sarah, Jessica, Mia, Hannah, Jenna, and Luna.  Our Term 1 and 2 Librarians will continue to create library book displays and take reading outside when the weather improves later this year.

PHOTOLIFE

PhotoLife came into school at the end of June to take individual and classroom photos of our students. PhotoLife sent an email home to each family, containing their individual order key code.

It seems that some of these emails may have ended up in either your trash or spam boxes. If you didn’t receive an email please check spam or trash and see if they are there. Orders for photos need to be placed asap.

RUGBY EXCHANGE

This week our boys and girls rugby teams both enjoyed a sports exchange with Pillans Point School.  Our teams travelled to PPS and enjoyed a day of competition and friendship.  Thank you to Mr Hull and those parents who were able to support on the day.

OTUMOETAI INTERMEDIATE SHOWCASE

Last week our Year 6 students attended the Showcase at Otumoetai Intermediate.  It was a fantastic show and a great opportunity for our Year 6’s to begin their transition to Year 7!
