Heron Herald Term 3, Week 2, 2023

Kia ora koutou,

What a wonderful start to Term 3 we have had.  With the weather being quite kind, we saw our Rākau Team taking part in Kids Can Ride, there has been lots of fun with Book Character Dress Up Day, and we enjoyed hosting our first Literacy Tour for parents.  You may have also noticed that fences have gone up, and the demolition of our music room has started.  This building has been in the sights of the Ministry of Education’s weather-tightness programme for some time.  After many meetings and discussions, we are excited to see this old space being replaced by a new building that will open again in 2024.  The construction programme will focus on the replacement of the music room first but then extends to some external work on the library during Term 4.  The library is not being demolished but does require some external work that will see it closed for most of Term 4.  This work will certainly create some strains on the day-to-day running of the school, however, the long-term benefits will be worth it.

OUT OF THIS WORLD SHOWCASE – PARENT INVITATION

Over the last term, classes have focused on learning in the Science and Technology Curriculum.  Within this, we have seen children exploring a range of topics, from the idea of flight to space and our solar system.  A powerful part of the learning process is having the opportunity to share learning with others.  On Thursday, 3rd August, we would love parents and whānau to visit the school between 1:45 and 2:45pm.  Classrooms will be open, and children will be ready to share something about the learning they have been engaging in.  This will look different across classrooms and age groups and will have a focus on talking about the process rather than just sharing an outcome.  We understand that not all parents can make it along.  If you can, please take the time to visit a range of classes and age groups to see what has been happening across the school.

WELCOME ROOM 8 and MRS BROWN

A special welcome to Mrs Sarah Brown, who has started Room 8 this term.  A group of excited 5 year-olds enjoyed their first days at school last week and are all settling in well.  We are thrilled to have Whaea Sarah on the team and trust that you will help her feel welcome as part of the Matua Team

FERGUSSON PARK OBSERVATORY

Room 17 had a blast at the Fergusson Park Observatory on Tuesday evening. We saw the planet Venus and the craters on the moon through their huge telescopes. It was amazing!

BOOK CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY

Our Book Character Dress Up Day proved to be a big success with lots of colorful and imaginative costumes on display.

Great fun and excitement with Jump Jam in the hall again! The new projector makes it so much easier for the children to watch and learn the routines.

LIBRARY

Book Character Day
The cold didn’t stop our book characters coming to life at Matua School this Wednesday!  There are books that stand the test of time with many Harry Potter, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Star Wars and Fairy Tale characters and Wally’s roaming the school.  There were also Wolf Girls, Fancy Nancys, Vikings and Vampires.
Book swapping was happening in classes and the discussions that followed left the school fizzing about books!!
Donate A Book Fair
The book fair in the library followed the book character day.  This is one of our longest standing school traditions.   A big thank you to our school librarians and our Matua Angels who helped out with our book fair.  Books will be issued to children and handed out in the next 1-3 weeks.  Consequently, children will have issued to them not just library books but also donated books – so it’s an exciting time when we have a large volume of books being read and enjoyed in our community.  Our school library is a reflection of our school community – another big thank you!  Profits from the bookfair are used to buy library books.  Let us know if there are any amazing books we need to purchase for the library.  We are always on the lookout for books or authors that have eluded us but will add value in our library.

 Many thanks Tracey Donovan-Grammer

SPORT

Kia ora Matua whanau, I hope everyone had a relaxing break from midweek and Saturday morning sport over the holidays. Now we are back into the swing of things with the remainder of the winter season. Just a reminder that sports fees are now due and payment can be made via Kindo.
Our Year 3 & 4 netball girls kicked off the first tournament of Term 3 in very wintery conditions. I think so far it was the coldest day of the year! Despite the cold the girls all played so well with numb fingers and frozen faces. Our year 6 netball girls competition will take place on Thursday 10th August.
On Tuesday 8th August, Pillans Point School will be returning to Matua with our annual rugby exchange in preparation for the local Kakahu Pekepeke Rugby Tournament which is taking place on Wednesday 16th August. Both our girls and boys rugby teams will play one another as a warm up game for the following week. Both schools look forward to this little exchange with some good healthy competition.
Also returning for another year are the Hockey Festival days which will take place on August 15th for our Year 3 & 4’s and August 22nd for our Year 5 & 6’s
Congratulations to all our students who took part in the Junior Tough Guy/Gal challenge. I have heard stories of how cold and muddy it was on the day and potentially look forward to entering a Matua team into the event in 2024.
Wrap up on those sidelines as the temperature has definitely dropped!

GARDEN 2 TABLE

Lots of fun to be had during Garden to Table this week.

YUMMY STICKERS

2023 has already thrown us all some tough challenges, but together we will get through it.

Our orchards like many other growers in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, have been badly affected by the recent cyclone.  Yummy are fortunate to have orchards spread widely across the Bay, which has meant some of our orchards have been completely devastated but some have survived.  It has been a tricky time for sure, but we are managing to pick the majority of our crop this season, so that’s some good news

The other good news is, we will push on with the Yummy School Sticker Promo again this year.  This is something we really value being part of, and I’m sure schools will value free sports gear even more  this year.  Even in these tough times, it’s great to be part of a community and give back to schools and kids, so thanks for being part of this promotion 26 years on!

You can start collecting anytime now (if you haven’t already started), and some more good news – we will be switching over to compostable stickers in the next few months
